The discovery of the nature and importance of phonemic awareness is said to be the single greatest breakthrough in reading this century(Adams 1990) Early knowledge of letter-sound relationship sets the stage for reading success. Phonetic instruction encourages children to examine all the letters of each new word, linking sound to each letter and identifying previously unseen words Initial phonetic instructions is best done with a small set of consonants and vowels. Children should become familiar with irregular high frequency words “sight words”, for example: you, are, the etc. Children need to be read to every day both at school and at home. They should be exposed to a wide range of books and materials. Right Start Introductory Integrated Reader includes activities to stimulate and reinforce learning.
